Lead Occupational Health Clinician - 93696

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is looking for an experienced Lead Occupational Health Clinician to join the Lab’s Health Services Clinic Team in the Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S, Division. In this role, you will supervise a talent team of healthcare professionals, provide hands on medical surveillance exams, medical evaluations, fitness evaluations, manage the technical programs, develop corrective actions associated with Federal OSHA and DOE safety regulations, and work to assure the Lab mission meets applicable EH&S related DOE orders, other regulatory requirements, and performance measures through technical program execution, planning, direction and management. 

Additionally, you will advise Department Heads on strategies to address regulatory matters, control of laboratory and workplace safety and health hazards, and minimize liability risks to customer divisions and Berkeley Lab.

What You Will Do:

• Serve as a direct supervisor to several Health Services Clinical staff, including developing staff expectations and evaluating overall performance. 

• Provide technical leadership and direction for staff who manage technical programs. Develop standard operating procedures for clinic tasks.

• Ensure optimum delivery of services, quality of care, and value from the clinic staff.

• Partner with the Medical Director to design long-term, high-impact programs and services.

• Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for matters relating to medical surveillance; periodic, placement and termination evaluations; and first aid and initial assessment of injuries and illnesses.

• Provide hands-on medical surveillance exams, medical evaluations, medical fitness determinations, and appropriate treatment.

• Serve on the disaster recovery team in a medical capacity, and apply specialized training of radiologically contaminated patients to effectively respond to this type of emergency.

• Provide back-up for the clinical functions of the occupational health nurses and medical assistants, including assisting in employee examinations, assessment, treatment, and/or referral of injured or ill • Ensure the proper management and disposition of employee medical problems, preparation of accurate records, maintenance of confidentiality of all employee medical information, and implementation of administrative procedures as required by workers' compensation laws and DOE and UC mandates.

• Lead the application of Integrated Safety Management principles in assigned functional areas.

• Coordinate with the Health Services Clinic Operations Manager on the Berkeley Lab Wellness Program health promotion activities.

• Ensure effective liaison of the group with Human Resources staff and EH&S Division specialists in fields such as industrial hygiene, occupational safety, radiation assessment, analytical services, risk management and fire protection, and with external agencies, including local public health agencies, UC, and Alta Bates Medical Center.

What is Required:

• Bachelor’s degree with at least 8 years of progressively responsible roles in the delivery of health care services (both occupational and non-occupational), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• A minimum of 5 years of experience managing clinical staff and a minimum of 3 years of experience as a health care practitioner in an ambulatory clinic setting.

• A minimum of 5 years of work experience including program planning and policy and procedure development.

• Certification required for nurses: COHN or COHN-S; for physician assistants: NCCPA.

• California licensure as a nurse, nurse practitioner or a physician's assistant 

• Significant knowledge of professional concepts and theories pertaining to employee wellness, emergency preparedness, and technical expertise related to medical surveillance.

• Knowledge of OSHA and other pertinent federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.

• Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a staff of health professionals and/or technicians, including the ability to oversee the performance of the work, obtain feedback, make improvement in work performance, plan all activities, identify and assess hazards of the workplace, and assure administrative and technical controls are used to mitigate the hazards.

• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to interface with all levels of personnel both internal and external to an organization with a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.

• Strong organizational and analytical skills, including the ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently to meet workload demands and deadlines, to respond quickly, and maintain flexibility during periods of • Ability to become certified in spirometry, audiometry, and CPR.

• Ability to perform the physical demands of this position, such as the ability to physically examine patients (detect the signs and symptoms of illness through visual, auditory and palpatory clues). 

What We Prefer:

• Experience in allied occupational health functions, such as industrial hygiene and occupational safety.

• Urgent Care or Emergency Room and/or prior Nurse Corps or Medical Specialist Corps experience.


• This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
